Old Timey Beef stew: ingredients

I made some slight changes to this old time beef stew recipe.

Add everything in the picture to the beef. I used bacon grease instead of vegetable oil to brown the beef, and honey instead of sugar. Also, celery is not tolerated, or available. My updated version of the recipe follows.

Ingredients

3 pounds stew beef
3 tablespoons bacon fat
3 cups water
2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 clove garlic, peeled
2 bay leaves
1 large onion, sliced
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoon honey
3/4 teaspoon pepper
3/4 teaspoon paprika
Dash ground allspice or ground cloves
4 large carrots, sliced
2 tablespoons cornstarch

Directions

Brown meat in hot oil. Add water, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, bay leaves, onion, salt, honey, pepper, paprika, and allspice. Cover and simmer 1 1/2 hours. Remove bay leaves and garlic clove. Add carrots. Cover and cook 30 to 40 minutes longer. To thicken gravy, remove 2 cups hot liquid. Using a separate bowl, combine 1/4 cup water and cornstarch until smooth. Mix with a little hot liquid and return mixture to pot. Stir and cook until bubbly.
